Denis Villeneuve Offers Update on DUNE Prequel Series THE SISTERHOOD
While Denis Villeneuve was developing the first Dune film, it was announced that he would also be developing a prequel series for HBO Max titled Dune: The Sisterhood.
The series is “designed to co-exist” with the Dune films, and the story is told “through the eyes of a mysterious order of women known as the Bene Gesserit. Given extraordinary abilities by their mastery of the body and the mind, the Bene Gesserit expertly weave through the feudal politics and intrigue of The Imperium, pursuing plans of their own that will ultimately lead them to the enigmatic planet Arrakis, known to its inhabitants as Dune.”
During a recent interview with Deadline, the filmmaker offered an update on the series, "We'll see what happens. The TV series is a work in progress, it's moving forward."
John Spaihts, who co-wrote Dune's script, also wrote The Sisterhood, and during another interview with The Playlist, he said, "Oh, that is carrying on and I'm not allowed to talk about it very much. But that effort is alive and well. I ended up getting moved off of it to work, not just on Dune: Part Two, but to investigate other cinematic prospects in the Dune universe, which we are still talking about and which, again, I'm not allowed to say very much about. But it is a very rich world in which to play, and I think it is ripe with opportunities for storytelling in every direction. They're well down the road, but I honestly don't know the details of the timing."
When previously talking about the series Villeneuve said, "The Bene Gesserit have always been fascinating to me. Focusing a series around that powerful order of women seemed not only relevant and inspiring but a dynamic setting for the television series."
Diane Ademu-John currently serves as its showrunner, and his credits include work on The Haunting of Bly Manor, The Originals, and The Vampire Diaries.
With as good as the first Dune movie was, I’m pretty excited to see what this series ends up delivering. I have no doubt that it will be just as great as what we saw in the first movie. In the meantime, Villeneuve and Spaihts are hard at work getting Dune: Part Two ready for production.
