Denis Villeneuve Talks About DUNE: PART TWO Saying It Will Be "Such a Cinematic Treat"
Denis Villeneuve is currently prepping production for Dune: Part Two, and it’s been teased that this next movie is going to the “main meal.” The director previously shared that Dune: Part One is just “an appetizer for the second part still to come.”
The filmmaker continues to tease what fans can expect from the sequel. In a recent interview with Empire, the filmmaker was asked about the possibility of seeing certain characters appear in the sequel such as Thufir Hawat, Duncan Idaho, or Oscar Isaac's Duke Leto. In response to that question, Villeneuve continues to hype the scale of the sequel saying:
"Well, that is a major spoiler! As Timothée [Chalamet] kept saying, the book has been out there for 60 years, it's a very well known story – but yes, some will reappear out of the dust. Part Two will be such a cinematic treat. Making Part One for me was just to [set] the table, you know? And to explain the cultures and the background of all the different planets and civilizations. And then to have that chance, now that everything is set, Part Two will be just an amazing playground. It will be so fun to do."
The filmmaker was then asked if the character Feyd-Rautha would appear in the movie, and this was his response:
"Definitely. That's a choice that I personally brought on. There was enough characters that were introduced in this first part, and it will be more elegant to keep Feyd for Part Two. It will be definitely a very, very important character in the second part."
When it was first announced that WB was moving forward with Dune: Part Two, the director offered some insight on the how far along development is on the sequel saying:
“It’s fantastic news, but it’s also kind of a burden. The good news is that a lot of the work has been done already regarding design, casting, locations and writing. So we’re not starting from scratch. It’s not a long period of time, but I will try to face that challenge because it’s important for me that the audience sees Part Two as soon as possible. It’s not a sequel where it’s another episode or another story with the same characters. It actually has direct continuity to the first movie. It’s the second part of the big, huge movie that I’m trying to do. So the sooner the better.”
Dune: Part Two will be released in theaters in 2023. I loved the first Dune movie, and I’m excited for the sequel because it’s going to be even bigger and better!
