Denis Villeneuve's DUNE: THE SISTERHOOD HBO Max Series Loses Its Showrunner
The director of the upcoming two-part adaptation of Frank Herbet’s Dune, Denis Villeneuve, and the film’s writer Jon Spaihts have been developing a TV series for HBO Max called Dune: The Sisterhood. Spaihts came on as the writer and showrunner, and according to Variety, he has stepped down as showrunner, but he will remain on board as an executive producer.
Denis Villeneuve is still attached to direct the pilot. The series is “designed to co-exist” with the Dune films, and the story is told '“through the eyes of a mysterious order of women known as the Bene Gesserit. Given extraordinary abilities by their mastery of the body and the mind, the Bene Gesserit expertly weave through the feudal politics and intrigue of The Imperium, pursuing plans of their own that will ultimately lead them to the enigmatic planet Arrakis, known to its inhabitants as Dune.”
It’s said that Spaits will now put his full focus on the Dune films. There’s no word on who will replace him, but I love the world of Dune and I’m excited to see how the upcoming films and this TV series turns out. With Villeneuve being heavily involved with the building of these worlds for film and TV, I have no doubt they are going to be incredible.
The series hails from Legendary Television, with Legendary also producing the upcoming film. Legendary has big plans for the franchise as they expand it across multiple platforms.
The first Dune film is set to hit theaters on November 20th, 2020. There’s no word on when the series will premiere.
