DESPICABLE ME is Now the Top-Grossing Animated Film Franchise Ever

The Despicable Me franchise has been popular since the fist movie surprised audiences in 2010. But now, 7 years and 4 movies later the franchise has surpassed the Shrek franchise to become the highest-grossing animated franchise of all time worldwide.

Deadline Hollywood reports A $21.2M international weekend on Despicable Me 3 was the final push the franchise needed to hit a $3.528B global total for Gru and his Minions. That edges out the Shrek record of five movies (including Puss In Boots) at $3.51B global.

Despicable Me 3 is at nearly $880M worldwide but still needs to be released in Italy, Turkey and Greece. So time will only tell if DM3 can break the $1B mark.

It looks like Gru and his minions have officially reached their long-time goal of world domination. And the domination will only grow, Universal has slated a July 4, 2020 release for Minions 2.
