Despite Box Office Struggles, Amazon MGM Says MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE Is Delivering Exactly What the Studio Wanted
When Amazon MGM’s Masters of the Universe hit theaters, there was a lot of hope that the long-awaited live-action adaptation of the beloved He-Man franchise would launch as a major theatrical event.
Instead, the film stumbled out of the gate financially, pulling in just $54.4 million worldwide during its opening weekend against a reported production budget approaching $200 million, not including marketing costs.
Those numbers aren’t what anyone would call a strong start. But Amazon MGM doesn’t seem particularly concerned.
The studio is taking a much broader view of the film’s performance, focusing on audience engagement and the movie’s long-term value rather than judging its success solely by opening weekend ticket sales.
In a statement to Variety, Amazon MGM’s domestic distribution chief Kevin Wilson shared the studio’s perspective on the film’s launch:
"[Director] Travis Knight and the entire cast and filmmaking team have delivered something truly special, and this opening is exactly the kind of critical first moment that validates our holistic distribution strategy – building awareness and engagement that will carry well beyond the theatrical window,"
The comment highlights an increasingly common approach among studios that also operate major streaming platforms.
While theatrical revenue remains important, movies like Masters of the Universe are also viewed as long-term assets that can continue attracting audiences once they arrive on streaming.
Whether that strategy ultimately pays off remains to be seen, but there are at least some encouraging signs for the fantasy adventure.
While critics and box office analysts continue to debate the film’s theatrical prospects, audiences appear to be responding much more positively. The movie currently holds an impressive 88% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, suggesting that moviegoers who are showing up are having a good time with it.
Directed by Travis Knight, the film stars Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam, the heir to Eternia who must return home to defend his world from the evil Skeletor, awesomely played by Jared Leto. The cast also includes Camila Mendes and Idris Elba, helping bring the iconic Mattel universe to life on the big screen.
I personally had a blast with it. It delivers exactly the kind of larger-than-life fantasy adventure that many fans were hoping for. Knight embraces the weirdness and spectacle of the property. The action is entertaining, the world-building is fun, and the movie captures the spirit of the classic franchise in a way that feels genuine.
Galitzine also does a great job carrying the film, bringing both sincerity and heroism to Prince Adam’s journey. Meanwhile, Leto leans fully into Skeletor, creating a villain who is theatrical, menacing, and the best part of the movie.
That doesn’t mean the movie is perfect, but it’s a far more enjoyable experience than its opening weekend numbers might suggest. In fact, it’s the kind of film that could find a larger audience over time through word-of-mouth and streaming.
The big question now is whether audience enthusiasm can translate into staying power. For a franchise with decades of nostalgia attached to it, that may be where the real test begins.
Amazon MGM clearly believes Masters of the Universe has a future that extends well beyond its theatrical debut.
