Details on Kylo Ren's Costume in STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII and How It Connects to Darth Vader

It looks like Kylo Ren could be getting a costume upgrade in director Rian Johnson's Star Wars: Episode VIII. As you all know, the villain has an obsession with his grandfather, Darth Vader. We saw part of this obsession in The Force Awakens as he was reverently staring at the Sith lord's helmet. We now have some new information on how Ren's new costume addition could link to Vader. If you don't want to know, don't read ahead.

The following information comes from Making Star Wars, who recently provided information on Luke Skywalker's new look.

The report says that Ren will be wearing the same mask and helmet in Episode VIII as he did in The Force Awakens, but his robes are going to be different. The report explains:

"The best way to describe Kylo Ren’s under-robe is that it is sort of like the black costume Luke wore in Return of the Jedi. However, the notable thing about the costume is the cape itself."

According to their inside sources, Kylo Ren is wearing Darth Vader's cape. This is supposedly the actual cape that Vader wears in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. The site goes on to explain:

"The cape does not have the same chain clasp. It is not entirely clear if this cape is one Kylo made to resemble that of his grandfather’s or if he actually procured one of Darth Vader’s capes that probably fell into the hands of collectors in the Star Wars galaxy."

It's explained that some of the more recent canonical publications focus on things like Vader’s lightsaber being sold on the black market and that there are senators who collect Imperial-era artifacts. So it's not hard to believe that Ren could have gotten his hands on Vader's cape. If that's true, then I guess Luke must have removed the cape from Vader before he set him on fire at the end of Return of the Jedi

As of right now there is no concrete information on the background of the cape or how Ren got his hands on it, or if it's even Vader's. It's just a cool little detail that I thought I'd share for all you hardcore Star Wars fans out there looking for some fun information on Episode VIII
