Dev Patel to Play Gawain in David Lowery's Arthurian Fantasy Epic GREEN KNIGHT

Dev Patel is looking to become a medieval knight. According to Variety, Patel is currently in negotiations to star as Sir Gawain in David Lowery’s Green Knight. The film will be a retelling of the classic tale Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. If you’re unfamiliar with the tale, here’s a quick synopsis:

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is one of the most famous tales in early English literature. As the story goes, chivalrous and loyal Sir Gawain, a knight of King Arthur’s Round Table, accepts the challenge of beheading the Green Knight and must wait a year and a day to receive a blow in return. In the end it was a test of his loyalty to the king.

I’m no expert on Arthurian lore which is why I found the choice of Patel an interesting one. When I think of the Knights of the Round Table, I just figure they’re all white Europeans. Patel would add a little diversity to the role as he himself is English, but his heritage is Indian. While it’s an interesting choice, I don’t think it’s a bad one. I quite enjoy Patel in his work and can’t wait to see what he does with the role of Gawain.
