DEVIL MAY CRY 3 On Switch is Fantastic Because of Freestyle Mode

Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition recently got ported over to the Nintendo Switch and Capcom was kind enough to send me a copy. This is my second time ever playing a Devil May Cry game and it’s a lot of fun. If you’ve played the game before, not much has changed, but you can now play it on the go. If you haven’t played this classic hack and slash title, check out my thoughts below.

First, I will admit the graphics do look a little dated, but this wasn’t a remake, so what did you expect. As far as the story goes, you play Dante, a half-demon half-human investigator and demon hunter. Then one day your pesky evil brother Vergil decides to do something, so now you have to get off your butt and stop him. It’s simple, but decent.

Devil May Cry 3 is an action adventure hack and slash game. Each mission features you running around killing enemies with the occasional puzzle thrown in for good measure. You get points at the end of the mission based on how well you killed everything and even how stylish your killing was. This is where the skill comes in. You raise your style points by using combos and changing things up. The more you just use one move, the lower your style score. This rewards creativity. Now, while the Switch port is almost identical to other ports, there is a new feature called Freestyle Mode that fans will love and that’s the ability to change fighting style on the fly. This allows you to get even more creative with your combos as you can go from Swordmaster to Trickster to Gunslinger to Royalguard with simple button pushes. Honestly, it is this feature that will get veterans to care about this port. It’s a great feature and if you don’t want to use it, you don’t have to. When you start a new game, you can choose whether or not to use it.

Of course, you start the game off with two pistols and your giant sword, but as you progress you’ll unlock additional weapons that are pretty awesome. For instance, after beating the Ice Guardian, you’ll get some cool nunchucks! You can also upgrade weapons as you go along with the red orbs you collect.

If you’ve played Devil May Cry 3 before, I recommend getting it on the Switch and playing with the new Freestyle option. If you’ve never played Devil May Cry 3, this is a great chance for you to give it a try. You can purchase the game now on the Nintendo eShop for $19.99.
