Did Daniel Day-Lewis Retire from Acting to Make Dresses?
Academy Award winner Daniel Day-Lewis announced last week that he is retiring from the world of acting. It is common knowledge that Day-Lewis is a pretty intense method actor, and in some cases lived his day-to-day life in a role as he prepared for production and even throughout the shooting schedule of the film. Sometimes it can take him years to prepare for a role. For example, throughout the production of Steven Spielberg's Lincoln, it is rumored that he had the cast and crew and even Mr. Spielberg himself addressing him on set as "Mr. President." But now there is a rumor that Day-Lewis has gone so method for his latest role that it may have inspired a complete career change.
In his next and final collaboration with director Paul Thomas Anderson, Day-Lewis plays a fashion designer in 1950's London for the yet to be titled film. A rumor from Page Six claims that Day-Lewis got so into the role that he wants to keep making clothes as a career.
"...Day-Lewis did such intense research and learned so much about couture fashion for his final film playing “an uncompromising dressmaker commissioned by royalty and high society” that he will stick with the profession off-screen and become a dressmaker."
This isn't the first time Day-Lewis has shifted careers, back in the 90's, Day-Lewis took a 5-year break from acting to work as a cobbler in a high-end Italian shoe factory. He did eventually resume his film career after that, so its very possible this could happen again after he gets sick of making dresses.
Sources also tell Page Six that he’s been planning to get out of acting for a long time, and was just looking for the right role to leave on a high note.
Who knows if this is true, but just in case it is, you should probably be on the lookout for a new Daniel Day-Lewis Etsy shop to pop up, or maybe he's working on getting his line in every Target across the country.
