Diego Luna Discusses the Evolution of Cassian Andor in ANDOR Season 2
The first season of Lucasfilm’s Andor series was pretty incredible and I can’t wait to see what Season 2 brings us! This second season will lead up to the events of Rogue One, and in a recent interview with Collider, Diego Luna opened up about his character and talked about his evolution and the changes we’ll see in him.
The first thing that Luna makes very clear is that Cassian is never a perfect hero, saying: "I mean, weaknesses you get to see even in Rogue One. It never ends.” He goes on to talk about how Cassian will be different in the upcoming second season saying:
"[I] think what happens also after prison and in the next episodes is that he understands really what he's fighting against. He understands the need [for] a revolution because he understands what oppression means basically and how little freedom he has and how unfair the world he lives in is. But there's still so much for him to learn in terms of working as a team."
The character still has a lot to learn now that he’s part of the rebellion and he has a long road before he becomes the person that we meet in Rogue One.
"I think in the first season we see him trying to survive and which is not necessarily being part of something. It's reacting to it. But now, yeah, he has to learn a lot from Luthen and from others, from other experiences, other events in order to be that person we meet in Rogue One."
Andor showrunner and creator Tony Gilroy previously talked about what that means for Cassian joining the Rebel fold:
“His allegiance to the Rebellion – which means a lot of different things to a lot of different people – his allegiance and his commitment to that will not be in doubt anymore. That’s a blood oath he’s made at the end. So that question is over. But becoming a leader… What do you do with that?”
Gilroy went on to say that the upcoming second season will follow Cassian’s evolution as a Rebel leader while the Alliance begins to come together:
“How are all of these disparate factions going to try to learn to play together and turn into Yavin? [There will be] all of the betrayal with that, all the manipulation of that by the Empire, the spy game, the war games, the personal stuff, while we’re telling a ripping yarn, a big adventure. But it will be about using [Cassian’s] leadership and negotiating his way through the minefield of a revolution that’s trying to come together.”
Andor Season 2 is currently in production and expected to premiere in 2024.
