Director Andy Serkis Says VENOM: LET THERE BE CARNAGE Pushes the Limits of PG-13
When it was announced that Venom: Let There Be Carnage would be PG-13 there were a lot of disappointed fans out there. Some fans were hoping for that R-rating, but seriously, that was never going to happen. Even though the story focuses on a villain who is a serial killer with insane powers, PG-13 is the only way they were going to go.
Director Andy Serkis is completely aware of the nervousness that fans are feeling in regards to the film because of the rating, but in a recently interview with IGN, he addresses that and attempts to alleviate those concerns saying that the film is pushing the limits of PG-13. He explains:
"You could go down an R-rated adult version of this. Of course you could. You could have done that with the last film. But we wanted to reach a big audience with this and ... there are several rules you have to abide by. However, having said that, I think we have pushed to the very limits [with] the danger and darkness and the threat and the menace of Carnage.
“Just because you don't see so much gore — perhaps there's not so much blood or ... seeing heads being bitten off — you can still suggest that. The suggestion, leaving it to the audience's imagination, can be just as powerful. I think that's just what we managed to do. It's certainly not shying away from the darkness. And the real heart of Carnage as a character isn't compromised at all."
Maybe that’ll make fans feel a little better about the PG-13 rating, maybe not. I personally don’t care about the rating. If they actually manage to tell a great story with a solid script, I’ll be happy.
Tom Hardy stars in the movie and he will be joined by Michelle Williams, Reid Scott, and Peggy Lu. It will also feature Woody Harrelson as the maniacal serial killer Cletus Kasady/Carnage, Naomie Harris as Frances Barrison/Shriek, and Stephen Graham as Detective Mulligan.
The movie will hit theaters on October 1st!
