Director Bryan Singer Is Making a Documentary Where He'll Address the Sexual Assault Allegations
Director Bryan Singer (The Usual Suspects, X-Men) is making an attempt for a comeback after all kinds of allegations were made against the director. He’s been out of the limelight for awhile, but now he’s working on developing three independent films and a documentary about himself.
According to Variety, Singer looking for financing for three feature films that are set in and around Israel, which is where the director has been living for the past couple of years. One of those films is said to be set in the 1970s.
Singer has met with several investors about backing the films, and he’s looking for a budget of $10 million for each movie. Those films will be produced by Jason Taylor, the former president of production at Singer’s Bad Hat Harry Prods.
As for the documentary, this is a self-financed film “about himself and his struggles.” It’s explained that Singer will address the numerous allegations of sexual misdeeds made against him. The movie will be part of the filmmaker’s attempt at making a career comeback. A source sarcastically said of the doc, “Well, at least we know it will be fair and balanced.”
The sexual misconduct allegations against Singer started in 1997 on the set of his film Apt Pupil. Two teenage boys filed a civil lawsuit claiming that they were ordered to strip naked for a scene, and two other young actors made similar allegations in separate civil suits. These were settled for an undisclosed amount of money and he’s never faced criminal charges.
Over the years things just escalated and more and more stories started to come out about Singer and how much of a nightmare it was for people who worked with him. A report came out about his time on X-Men that explained that “crises raged” and that there was drug use, tantrums, and a writers' feud. On top of that one of the film's actors filed a civil suit after production wrapped, “claiming that he was raped by three of Singer's friends and business associates.” Then there was a moment during shooting when the cast of the film threatened to quit. All the while, Fox had Singer’s back. He didn’t face any consequences, and as one producer said, “it created a monster.”
So, good luck to Singer on his comeback and that documentary.
