Director Colin Trevorrow Talks About the Upside and Downside to Having an R-Rated JURASSIC Franchise
The Jurassic Park and Jurassic World franchise has been bringing families to the theaters for almost the last 30 years! Most of us grew up on the dinosaur films, and they filled us with wonder and excitement. The CG work in the first movie was so ahead of its time, it still perfectly holds up for original fans and brand new fans in the next generation. But what if the original, or any of its sequels, had taken the hardcore “R” rated horror route?
Jurassic World franchise co-writer and director Colin Trevorrow recently sat down with Collider to discuss this “what if” at an event to promote the extended edition of Jurassic World Dominion. When asked about what he thought of a rated R Jurassic franchise, Trevorrow responded:
“It's hard to answer that question. I don't know. I do know that if we made ‘A Quiet Place’, if we made a hard R really scary version, potentially very contained, I know I'd want to see that movie. If a parent took their kid to that movie and horrified them for life, I know that would be a problem. Look, I don't want to put any cuffs on whoever has a vision for this in the future. All I know is that people love dinosaurs, people love movies with dinosaurs in them, and I know people love the world that [‘Jurassic Park’ author] Michael Crichton created. The reason why there are dinosaurs and humans in the same place, that sci-fi idea, it's a brilliant idea. From there, I feel like someone else should come to us.”
So essentially, if they made it, it would absolutely put people in seats to watch it, but it wouldn’t have that beloved nostalgic feeling because not nearly as many kids and families would go see it together. It also may not have the same drive to move so many sequels through the box office. So if someone does make a scarier, gorier dino movie, it had better be good, because it has the Jurassic movies to be compared against.
Would you like to see an R-rated dinosaur movie??
