Director Danny Boyle Confirms He's Developed a Third 28 DAYS LATER Movie Idea with Alex Garland

If you are fans of the 28 Days Later zombie film franchise, you might be happy to learn that a long-awaited third film is in development. The franchise launched with 2002 with 28 Days Later and then the sequel, 28 Weeks Later, was released in 2007. After that there was a lot of talk about a 28 Months Later sequel, but nothing ever came of it.

Now director and producer Danny Boyle is teasing that a third film is in development. He says that he has an idea for the story and that he is re-teaming with original writer Alex Garland (Dredd, Ex Machina, Annihilation) on the project.

"Alex Garland and I have a wonderful idea for the third part. It's properly good."

As for when we might actually see the movie get made, it all hinges on Garland’s schedule. But there is an idea out that has been developed and it’s ready to go whenever Garland is ready for it. Boyle went on to say:

"The original film led to a bit of a resurgence in the zombie drama and it doesn't reference any of that. It doesn't feel stale at all. He's concentrating on directing his own work at the moment, so it's stood in abeyance really, but it's a you-never-know."

Garland is currently writing and directing an eight episode sci-fi thriller series called Devs for FX. Once he’s done with that, maybe he’ll jump on board this new zombie project and bring it to life. I loved the first two films in this zombie franchise. At the time it was unlike any kind of zombie film that I had seen before. It definitely brought something fresh, cool, and unique to the genre. I’d love to see what Boyle and Garland have come up with for this next chapter of the franchise!
