Director Danny Boyle Confirms He's Done With Film Franchises After Dropping Out of BOND 25
For a few months last year, director Danny Boyle was in charge of directing the next Bond movie in development, Bond 25. That didn’t last, and what we heard about it over the months that followed was just that there were “creative differences,” which can mean so many different things. Boyle has opened up a bit about it now and has a clearer perspective on the whole thing.
While promoting his most recent movie, Yesterday, Boyle spoke frankly about why he is not cut out for the Bond franchise, or any franchise for that matter:
“I learned my lesson that I am not cut out [for franchises] otherwise you’re digging in the same hole. I am better not quite in the mainstream franchise movies, is the honest answer.”
Boyle defended his choice to not work with a new writer chosen by the executives by saying:
“I learned quite a lot about myself with Bond. I work in partnership with writers and I am not prepared to break it up. We were working very, very well but they didn’t want to go down that route with us […] What John [Hodge] and I were doing, I thought, was really good. It wasn’t finished, but it could have been really good. You have to believe in your process and part of that is the partnership I have with a writer. It is like someone coming and saying, ‘Hey, we are going to give you a different editor.’ Those fundamental partnerships are vital.”
Boyle has said he wishes new director Cary Fukunaga the best in the making of the film, and just feels that it’s a shame his original script wasn’t used. It’s all too bad. I think Boyle could have been a great fit, and I was interested in his take on the franchise. But at least he got out before things got too far along, and he knows what he is willing to take on in the future.
Are you looking forward to Bond 25? Which director do you think is the best fit?
