Director Drew Goddard Discusses The Future of His X-FORCE Film After DEADPOOL 2
If you haven't seen Deadpool 2 yet, you might want to skip this article because it deals with how the X-Force team was handled in the movie. If you did see the film, you know exactly what I'm talking about.
In a completely surprising twist, almost the entire X-Force team that Deadpool gathered together to fight Cable was killed off as fast as they were introduced in the most hilarious ways. It was amazingly funny. Those characters included Shatterstar, Bedlam, Zeitgeist, and The Vanisher.
I was actually wondering what this meant for director Drew Goddard's X-Force film and what he thought about the characters being killed off like that. Turns out he was completely on board with it and thought it was great! During a recent interview with EW Goddard explained:
"To be honest, I think that’s why it excited me so much. I remember reading that scene and just cackling with delight, specifically because it was the very last thing you’d expect to happen in one of these movies. These movies are so careful to set up the next thing and the next thing, and it made me so happy."
Goddard says that he wanted Ryan Reynolds and his team to make the movie that they wanted to make and that he'd figure out what to do with the X-Force after the fact:
"One thing I said to Ryan was, ‘Don’t worry about it, we’ll come up with new ideas; you guys go make your movie, and do your thing. We’ll figure it out.' That tends to be the way I like to work. It’s much more important to focus on making the movie that you’re making than focusing on the next thing. It’s much more important to just make one good movie and take your time, then let that dictate what the movies are after."
While there's no doubt that more X-Force team members will be introduced in the upcoming movie, Goddard says that Deadpool, Domino and Cable are the core members.
"It really all stems from a place of love; I love those comics, I love Ryan, I love Josh, and I love Zazie Beetz. When I think of the comics, I think of Cable and Domino and Deadpool, and it’s really just knowing, ‘Oh, right, there’s a world in the X-Universe for the blunt instruments of mutantdom.’ It’s much more about the characters and my love for them than it is about any plot or story line. It’s more about loving them and wanting to see them bounce off each other."
There are a lot of other mutant characters for Goddard to choose from, but chances are Shatterstar, Bedlam, Zeitgeist, and The Vanisher won't be among them. What other characters would you like to see join the X-Force team in the movie?
