Guy Ritchie Gives Update on the Future of Robert Downey Jr.'s SHERLOCK HOLMES 3

Director Guy Ritchie teamed up with actor Robert Downey Jr. and a fantastic ensemble including Jude Law and Rachel McAdams to bring Sherlock Holmes to the big screen in two crime-solving adventures- Sherlock Holmes (2009), and Sherlock Homes: A Game of Shadows (2011).

The films were widely enjoyed by audiences, and the cast and filmmaker were open about their hopes for a third film, but with Downey’s rise to new levels of stardom amid his run as Tony Stark aka Iron Man in the MCU, a third movie was not in the stars, at least not at the time.

Ritchie went on to make many more films and shows, and at the release of his most recent film, In the Grey, the actor was asked by Collider if he wanted to make the third movie. Ritchie responded:

“I’d love to. I adore Downey, and I adored making those two movies. Look, I think it’s just honestly a question of just aligning our schedules. I know the appetite for it’s there, but the appetite for it from our side is there, too. So, we’d love to make that happen. I just don’t know how it’s going to happen. It’s amazing that it hasn’t happened.”

Downey had some time away from Marvel, after the death of his beloved character, but he’s back- now playing Doctor Doom in the upcoming Avengers films.

So we may just have to wait a while more for the stars to align. While I would enjoy another film from this crew, and Ritchie’s new Young Sherlock series has been a lot of fun, what I really want is another season of Sherlock starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. But no one asked me.

Which Sherlock Holmes movie or show has been your favorite iteration of the classic tales?
