Director James Cameron Congratulates AVENGERS: ENDGAME Taking Back the #1 Spot From AVATAR
Director James Cameron got very used to being the guy who made the movie at the top of the box office. In 1997, his film Titanic booted Jurassic Park out of its four-year reign as highest grossing film in the box office. Titanic held an incredible 13 year run, until Cameron himself ousted the film’s rank with the release of Avatar.
From 2010 to 2019, Avatar held the title, which was then taken over by Avengers: Endgame. But in 2021, as fans were awaiting the release of the long-awaited Avatar sequel, the first film got a limited re-release, and that bumped it back into the #1 spot.
Now, with last month’s re-release of Avengers Endgame: Encore, in anticipation of Avengers: Doomsday this December, Avengers: Endgame has retaken the throne!
Cameron took to social media to acknowledge the achievement with congratulations, a beautiful piece of artwork featuring Iron Man among the Na’vi people in Pandora, and a sentiment that points to Cameron’s genuine joy in seeing people return to movie theatres.
Now we will just have to wait and see if Endgame goes on to hold the title for long. With Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars headed our way, anything can happen!
