Director Jon M. Chu Lobbying Disney+ to Develop a Rose Tico STAR WARS Spinoff Series
Jon M. Chu, director of Crazy Rich Asians, has thrown his hat, and his opinion, into the ring at Disney+ concerning the character Rose Tico, played by Kelly Marie Tran. Rose Tico was introduced into the Star Wars universe in the 8th film, The Last Jedi. She was a great character in the film, but got a lot of flak from people who weren’t keen on her for whatever reason. The film set it up for her to return as an integral part in the final film, and also hinted at a relationship between her and Finn.
When we met Rose Tico she was mourning her sister, Paige, who sacrificed herself to bomb a Dreadnought. Rose is a resistance mechanic who is smart and brave and one of the good guys. But unfortunately, Tran’s character was cut down to almost nothing in the final installment, The Rise of Skywalker. Despite director J.J. Abrams previously praising the character, he chose to minimize her role. According to an article over at theverge, Rose Tico appeared in the film for a total of 76 seconds. She was given a throwaway part, and fans are pretty bummed about it. That includes Jon M. Chu.
After seeing the film and feeling the disappointment himself, Chu tweeted the following:
Chu has the chops, and I would imagine he has some pull as a director, after having such success with Crazy Rich Asians. I think the character of Rose Tico is interesting and has a lot of story to tell. I’d be down for a series about her, and I think there are a lot of fans who would be too.
