Director Matthew Vaughn Explains KINGSMAN: THE GREAT GAME is Going To Be "Very Very Different"
We’ve already been told that Kingsman: The Great Game will be a prequel story set in 1910 during World War I, so I was already preparing myself for a different kind of Kingsman movie. But, director Matthew Vaughn recently talked about the film and he explained that the movie might be so different that fans of the franchise who watch it might say, “What the hell has he gone and done?”.
While talking to the ReelBlend podcast, Vaughn explained:
“When we came up with Kingsman sitting in that pub with Mark Miller seven years ago, it was very much a thing of two fanboys getting drunk, lamenting about what's happened to spy movies. And then the more I'd gotten involved in it, the more I just felt … was I planning a universe? No, but a universe sort of [developed]. It's been like the Big Bang, that all these other ideas are coming. I don’t know where they come from, but I'm excited. Because the prequel is so different. For me, it was a whole new muscle to go off and develop, and I hope the public likes it. I don't know. I mean, I'm very proud of it already. But it’s very, very different. So some people will -- the people who hated Kingsman would probably love it, and all the people who love Kingsman might go, ‘What the hell has he gone and done?’ But hopefully people will like it. … It's different in every which way but loose, apart from an ape.”
So far, the film has a great cast that includes Ralph Fiennes, Liam Neeson, Harris Dickinson (The Darkest Minds), and will reportedly take place in 1910. The movie will also include Daniel Brühl (Captain America: Civil War), Game of Thrones star Charles Dance, Rhys Ifans (Harry Potter, Spider-Man), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass), and Matthew Goode (Watchmen), Gemma Arterton, Djimon Hounsou, and more.
The hero of the story is a character named Conrad, “a cocky young son of a British Duke determined to serve his country.” His parents are the “Duke and Duchess of Oxford (Oxfords, not brogues) and Conrad will find himself thrust into the midst the world of espionage with some of history’s most dangerous spies and assassins.” Dickinson will be playing this role.
I’m excited to see how this turns out! I like that the movie is going to be different from anything we’ve seen in the franchise before. That’s one of the things that will make it so much fun!
Kingsman: The Great Game will be released on February 14th, 2020.
