Director Rian Johnson Explains That He Won't Let Criticism of THE LAST JEDI Affect His New STAR WARS Trilogy

A lot of Star Wars fans made it very clear that they weren't happy with what Rian Johnson did with Star Wars: The Last Jedi. I'm still kind of surprised that it was met with so much criticism. But as director Rian Johnson moves forward with the development of his new Star Wars trilogy that is set in a different corner of the Star Wars universe, he's not going to let that criticism affect his work.

During an interview conducted by Fandango's Erik Davis at SXSW, he asked Johnson whether the fan reaction to The Last Jedi would affect the way he approaches his new Star Wars story and he said:

"No, not really. I mean, I feel like every Star Wars thing that ever gets made has a big, loud response because Star Wars fans are passionate and that's what makes them awesome.
"I don't think it's possible when, if you're really telling a story you care about and having it come from your heart, it's just not possible to be intellectually processing what everyone else wants and nor would it be a good thing, a healthy thing. I don't think that's a good way to tell a story."

He makes some good points there. You really can't let that kind of negativity hold you down while trying to create a new story. We still don't know what that story will be, but he's sure excited about it!

"There's just so much potential and I can't wait to jump into it. What makes me so excited about it is the idea of doing a new story on the big canvas of three movies in this world."

I personally loved what Johnson did with The Last Jedi and I can't wait to see what he ends up giving us with this new trilogy of films.
