Director Rian Johnson Offers a Little Update on His STAR WARS Trilogy

While some Star Wars fan aren’t happy with the fact that Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson is developing a brand new trilogy of films, he is very much still working on them.

There have been a lot of rumors that he’s been fired, or that his films have been scrapped, but that’s just not the case. Johnson is still actively developing these movies, but they are a ways off. During a recent interview with Uproxx, the filmmaker offered a little update saying:

“I’m where I can’t say anything about it. Still completely in process with it….’It’s a process’ means it’s a process. So that means it could change, it could shift. There are a bunch of moving parts with it.”

The earliest we could possibly see this movie in theaters is in 2024. It’s been revealed by Disney CEO Bob Iger that David Benioff and D.B. Weiss’s first Star Wars entry arrives in theaters in 2022. So Johnson’s will come at some point after that. When previously talking about the film, Johnson talked about the challenge of developing a new story set in the Star Wars universe:

“We’re doing something that steps beyond the legacy of the characters. What does it look like? To me, the blue sky element of it is what was most striking about it. I know that I’m coming at it and what’s fun about it for everyone in George Lucas’ films is figuring it out, ‘what’s the next step?’ It really makes you think and figure out what the essence of Star Wars is for me and what that will look like moving forward.”

The movie is going to be set during a different corner of the Star Wars universe and will feature all new characters. I’m really curious to see what the Star Wars franchise will look like with a completely new story that isn’t attached to anything from the original saga.

I know some fans don’t care for Johnson and what he does with the franchise, but as you know… I’m excited about it! I hope he delivers something awesome, entertaining, and unique. But only time will tell.
