Director Richard Kelly Is Developing More Stories Set in the DONNIE DARKO Universe
Those of you who are fans of director Richard Kelly’s cult classic Donnie Darko will be interested to learn that the filmmaker is developing more stories that are set in the Donnie Darko universe. Kelly shared the news during a recent interview with SFX Magazine/GamesRadar, saying:
"I've been working on a lot more story that could exist in the Donnie Darko universe, and it’s been really rewarding. I’ve been under a lot of pressure to deliver – a lot of people are very passionate about me returning to this world."
When talking about the future of the franchise, he added:
"There’s a scene in the film where you see Donnie lying in bed, and he’s playing with a Rubik’s Cube, and he looks over at a calendar, and the days are ticking by. I’ve kind of been with my own Rubik's Cube, trying to solve the puzzle. I'm very excited about what the future could hold, and that there could be a much bigger, much more exciting story which could be told in this world. So we’ll see."
Back in 2009, there was a terrible Donnie Darko sequel made titled S. Darko. It centers on Donnie’s younger sister, but Kelly had no involvement with that project.
I’d love to see what Kelly is planning for these stories in the Donnie Darko universe. Hopefully, one day we get to actually see these projects that he’s working on! He hasn’t made a film since the 2009 psychological thriller The Box. I’ve always liked Kelly’s crazy, weird, and mind-bending stories and I’d like to see him jump back into it and get to bring these new Donnie Darko stories to life.
