Director Ruben Fleischer Says VENOM is Leading To a Confrontation with Spider-Man
While Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures are working on two more Spider-Man film projects together, Venom director Ruben Fleischer believes that everything is leading to Tom Holland’s Spider-Man facing off with Tom Hardy’s Venom.
Ever since Sony started developing Venom, fans have been wondering if Holland’s Spider-Man will eventually make his way into Sony’s Spider-Verse. If Disney can’t buy Spider-Man from Sony, I imagine the answer to that question is yes. Once Spider-Man is fully back in the hands of Sony, he will be introduced to the cinematic universe they are building.
During a recent interview with Fandom, Fleischer explains that that’s where this is all headed:
“That’s where it’s all going to lead. And that’s the exciting thing, because we changed the origin of Venom … in the comics, he evolved from Spider-Man but because of the Marvel-Sony thing we weren’t able to that. And so the thing I think it’s building towards, and will be exciting to see, is when they actually do confront each other.”
By the time that happens, hopefully Sony really does figure out how to handle these characters properly on the big screen. I think a Venom and Spider-Man movie could be incredible, the characters and story just need to be handled right.
Fleischer isn’t involved with the upcoming Venom sequel, but he does have a knowledge of what Sony’s plans are for the character! Andy Serkis is helming Venom 2 and Fleischer says he’s looking forward to what’s coming in the franchise saying, "I was kinda happy to let somebody else take over. And I’m excited to see what [Serkis] does with it."
The filmmaker went on to reflect on the critic’s reaction to his Venom movie, saying:
“If anything, I would have changed the critics’ reaction to it. I was really bummed that people didn’t like it because it’s a crowdpleasing movie and I’m not sure if there was just blowback against Sony or people just worship Marvel. But I was really surprised that the critics [were gunning for it] because audiences really enjoyed the movie. And so many people who’ve seen it just appreciated that it was a fun superhero movie. So I was a little surprised. I don’t know what they were expecting.”
For me, I personally didn’t think the story was very good and it was filled with so many plot holes. But, I do know that a lot of people enjoyed the movie. After all, it did have some undeniably fun moments!
Anyway, what do you all think about seeing Hardy’s Venom and Holland’s Spider-Man facing off on the big screen one day? How do you think Marvel and Sony are going to set up Spider-Man’s entrance to the Spider-Verse?
