DOCTOR STRANGE Director Scott Derrickson Explains Why BARBIE Should Win Best Picture

Director Scott Derrickson is known for making a lot of big blockbuster horror movies and dark dramas that include The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Sinister, Doctor Strange, and The Black Phone. But first and foremost, he’s a movie fan, and one of his favorites of the year is Barbie. Derrickson sat down with The Discourse podcast to chat about movies, and he went so far to say that he believes Barbie should win the Oscar for Best Picture!

“I think Barbie is the best film I’ve seen this year—well, maybe that’s not true; I saw this horror film, When Evil Lurks at Fantastic Fest, but Barbie and When Evil Lurks those are my two favorite films of the year, which couldn’t be further away from each other. Barbie is a good example of populist I.P. that was treated with true brilliance. That’s an extraordinary movie on every level. I think it should probably win Best Picture; the writing is so clever and so smart and subversive, the acting is amazing, and it’s so entertaining, it’s artful in its visuals, the style of it, it’s just an awesome film.”

I agree with him. That movie was brilliant, and I think it deserves at least the nomination, if not the win. The movie definitely has a chance, not only did audiences and critics love the movie it made over a billion dollars at the box office. I don’t think anyone was expecting this movie to do as well as it did.

What do you think? Do you think Barbie will be nominated for Best Picture?
