Director Shawn Levy Heads to the Stars With New Netflix Sci-Fi Drama SOMEWHERE OUT THERE

Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy is stepping into the director’s chair for a new original sci-fi drama titled Somewhere Out There, which has landed at Netflix after a competitive bidding war.

The script comes from Max Taxe, and it clearly struck a chord. Levy isn’t just directing, he’s also producing through his 21 Laps banner alongside Dan Levine. The project sounds like it’s aiming for something more emotional than explosive.

The story follows a grieving father who, after losing his wife, sends a message out into the stars… and gets a response. That concept puts it in the same emotional territory as films like Arrival and The Adam Project, both of which where character driven sci-fi concepts.

Levy has been on a serious run lately. Between helping shape shows like Stranger Things and All the Light We Cannot See, he’s proven he knows how to balance spectacle with character-driven storytelling.

And on the big screen, his recent hit Deadpool & Wolverine didn’t just perform well, it pulled in a massive $1.086 billion globally, becoming the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever.

He’s also fresh off wrapping production on Star Wars: Starfighter, which features Ryan Gosling, Amy Adams, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, and Aaron Pierre. That film is set for a theatrical release on May 28, 2027.

As for Taxe, this isn’t his first collaboration with 21 Laps. He previously worked with the company on Ripple, which has Jack Quaid attached to star. His past credits include Moonshot, starring Lana Condor and Cole Sprouse, which premiered on HBO Max.

Meanwhile, 21 Laps is staying busy across the board. The company is finishing up production on the Netflix comedy One Attempt Remaining, directed by Kay Cannon and starring Jennifer Garner and John Cena. They’re also wrapping an untitled hockey series for Netflix featuring Michelle Monaghan.

With Somewhere Out There, Levy seems ready to explore a quieter, more emotional corner of sci-fi again.
