Director Simon Kinberg Reveals Why Wolverine Wouldn't Have Appeared in X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX
The reviews for X-Men: Dark Phoenix have been rolling in and as expected, it’s crashing and burning with the critics. A lot of fans didn’t think that this movie was going to be good and it looks like the movie is living up to those low expectations.
It’s a shame because the story from the comics is so freakin’ good! All they had to do was tell that story! One of the big elements of the Dark Phoenix story was the relationship between Wolverine and Jean. But, with the age difference between Hugh Jackman and Sophie Turner, it was obvious that there was no way that was going to happen.
During an interview with Rolling Stone, director Simon Kinberg talked about Jean being the focus of the story and explains why Wolverine wouldn’t have been included in the story even if Hugh Jackman was available to it.
“There was an element of this being Jean’s story. And I was committing so fully to it that I didn’t want to run the risk of pulling away from Jean by going to the well of a fan-favorite character in these movies. I wanted this to be a very different experience of seeing an X-Men movie.”
The director goes on to discuss the relationship between Logan and Jean and how it wouldn’t have worked due to the age difference of the two actors:
“If you know the Dark Phoenix story, you’d want to really service the love story between Logan and Jean. And I think the notion of Hugh Jackman, as great as he looks for his age, and Sophie Turner — it didn’t sit well with me. Or anyone else!”
I guess they kind of painted themselves into a corner with how they handled timeline in the franchise. It’s crazy to me that they still couldn’t take this great story arc and adapt it into a good film!
In the end, from the sound of it, it looks like Brett Ratner’s X-Men: The Last Stand is a better film than Dark Phoenix. That’s pretty sad.
Hey! At least Marvel Studios can actually start making some great X-Men movies again at some point in the future!
