Disney+ has been steadily successful with their crowd-pleasing content since coming out, but definitely had an uptick of viewers when they aired the Broadway musical Hamilton on the Fourth of July weekend. Disney+ took note, and decided to bring another beloved musical from the stage to the screen in the form of the classic Broadway hit, Once On This Island.

The musical “set in the Caribbean's French Antilles, tells the story of a peasant girl named Ti Moune who falls in love with an aristocrat. This prompts a wager among the island's gods as to whether love or death is stronger, which plays out as a backdrop to the class-conscious romance.”

The film will be an actual movie adaptation, not take place on the stage as Hamilton did. Jocelyn Bioh (Russian DollShe's Gotta Have It) is set to write the script for the adaptation, with Marc Platt (La La Land) attached to produce, and Kenyan filmmaker Wanuri Kahiu (Rafiki) directing.

I really enjoyed seeing Hamilton, and I am looking forward to the upcoming screen adaptations of In The Heights, and the remakes of West Side Story and Fiddler On the Roof. So this just fits right in. Are you interested in seeing Once On This Island?
