Disney and Lucasfilm Are Slowing Down on STAR WARS Films and Will Be More Careful With Volume and Timing

Disney CEO Bob Iger admits that maybe they went pushed too much Star Wars out too fast and now Lucasfilm is slowing things down on the Star Wars front.

Not long after Disney bought Lucasfilm it was revealed that the plan would be to put out two Star Wars films a year thinking that it would see the same kind of success as Marvel. Things obviously didn’t work out that way, especially with Solo not meeting their expectations.

I think the Star Wars films that have been released so far have been great. You’ll find no complaints from me, but there are plenty of other fans that will gladly share their grievances with you.

In a recent interview with THR, Iger says that fans can expect to see the Star Wars films being released spread out more going forward. He said that the current rate of one Star Wars movie a year is a bit too much for a franchise:

I made the timing decision, and as I look back, I think the mistake that I made—I take the blame—was a little too much, too fast. You can expect some slowdown, but that doesn’t mean we’re not gonna make films. J.J. [Abrams] is busy making [Episode] IX. We have creative entities, including [Game of Thrones creators David] Benioff and [D.B.] Weiss, who are developing sagas of their own, which we haven’t been specific about. And we are just at the point where we’re gonna start making decisions about what comes next after J.J.’s. But I think we’re gonna be a little bit more careful about volume and timing. And the buck stops here on that.

So, who knows what we’re going to see after Star Wars: Episode IX. As of right now, Rian Johnson and the Game of Thrones series’ creators, Benioff and Weiss, are working on trilogies. We also know that films about Obi-Wan Kenobi and Boba Fett have also been in development. But only time will tell what the next film in the Star Wars pipeline will be made and released.

I’m fine with the studio slowing things down. They don’t need to rush these Star Wars films out. They just need to give us fun movies that tell great stories that are set in the galaxy far far away. There’s nothing wrong with giving these films more time for development to give fans the best possible films.
