Disney Animation Boss Says “Nothing Is Impossible” When Asked About a KINGDOM HEARTS Movie
Could Kingdom Hearts finally make the jump to the big screen? Disney hasn’t announced a movie, but Walt Disney Animation Studios chief creative officer Jared Bush has offered an encouraging response to fans hoping to see Sora’s adventure turned into an animated feature.
Bush was recently asked by IGN about the possibility of turning Kingdom Hearts into a movie. His response offers fans at least a tiny bit of hope that it could eventually happen.
Bush said: "I'd say I am always excited to hear what people are passionate about. We have a very bright future of new projects coming out, different ways of putting material out into the world. I'd just say nothing is impossible."
That’s obviously far from a Kingdom Hearts movie announcement, so nobody should start planning their opening-night Keyblade cosplay just yet. Still, it’s interesting that Bush left the door open, especially at a time when Disney and Square Enix are doing more with Kingdom Hearts than we’ve seen in years.
Kingdom Hearts 4 is officially targeting a late 2027 release, and series creator Tetsuya Nomura has already made it clear that a delay “isn’t happening.” Disney also showed off more of the game at D23, including a look at a Coco-themed world that Sora will explore.
Nomura also revealed that Kingdom Hearts 4 will finally introduce an idea the development team originally wanted to use in Kingdom Hearts 3 but couldn’t pull off at the time.
During D23’s Deep Dive into Kingdom Hearts panel, Nomura explained: "When it comes to the overall game design, for Kingdom Hearts 4 there's actually an idea that we had since Kingdom Hearts 3, that we weren't able to realize just because of certain difficulties.
"But we were able to realize that with this installment. For us, we think it's a very, very exciting idea and so I do hope people look forward to it."
What exactly that idea is remains a mystery, but it gives fans another reason to keep an eye on the long-awaited sequel as Square Enix pushes the franchise into its next chapter.
The games aren’t the only place Kingdom Hearts is expanding, either. A Kingdom Hearts anime is currently in development at Disney+, with Nomura and members of the Kingdom Hearts 4 team involved. Nomura has encouraged fans to study the anime’s first piece of key art and “let your imaginations run wild,” saying it contains a “hint” about the original story.
So while a Kingdom Hearts movie isn’t currently on Disney’s announced slate, it could happen one day. Kingdom Hearts has all the ingredients for a wild animated feature.
It has a huge Disney playground, Final Fantasy connections, memorable heroes and villains, and enough complicated lore to make a two-hour screenplay writer stare into the darkness for several days.
The biggest challenge might be figuring out which version of Kingdom Hearts would actually work as a movie. Would Disney adapt Sora’s original adventure, create a completely new story, or build something designed to exist alongside the games?
Whatever the answer, fans can at least keep the idea on their wish lists. Disney isn’t promising a Kingdom Hearts movie, but for now, it isn’t saying it’s impossible either.
