Disney Announces COCO 2 with 2029 Theatrical Release

Get ready to return to the Land of the Dead as Disney has officially announced they are developing Coco 2. During Disney’s Annual Shareholder Meeting, CEO Bob Iger confirmed that Pixar is developing a sequel to the beloved 2017 film, with a theatrical release planned for 2029.

The project is still in early development, but Iger assured fans that it will capture the same magic as the original. He said:

“While the film is just in the initial stages, we know it will be full of humor, heart, and adventure, and we can’t wait to share more soon.”

Pixar is bringing back key creatives from Coco, including director Lee Unkrich and co-director Adrian Molina. Mark Nielsen (Toy Story 4, Inside Out 2) is set to produce.

The original Coco followed a 12-year-old boy, Miguel, who dreams of becoming a musician despite his family’s strict ban on music. After accidentally entering the Land of the Dead, he embarks on a journey to uncover his family’s history and prove his passion for music.

The film was a massive success, winning two Academy Awards including Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for Remember Me.

Alongside Coco 2, Disney is also working on a Coco-themed ride for Disney California Adventure, expanding the film’s presence in the parks.

While details about the sequel’s story are still under wraps, we can only hope that Pixar will craft a worthy follow-up to one of its most emotionally powerful films.
