Damn Disney! The NatGeo-produced series adaptation of Tom Wolfe’s 1979 book The Right Stuff was one of the better original shows that they had on their streaming service Disney+, but it’s been canceled.

According to the report, “the cancellation was not tied to the show’s performance but a redesign of NatGeo’s strategic focus.” I guess Disney didn’t like the direction NatGeo wanted to take it? While I’d normally be bummed out, WB is out looking for a new home and it’s said that there are two versions of the show that are being shopped around, “one of which involves the current cast’s contracts being extended, but another that focuses on the 1980s and features a new cast.”

Personally, I think they should just do both! They should finish off the story they started with Season 1 with the current cast and then start a new chapter of the series that’s set in the 80s. If there ends up being subsequent seasons, “the Apollo Space Program, the moon landing, and other missions had previously been identified as topics of exploration.”

The series tells the incredible story of the early days of the U.S. space program. At the height of the Cold War, newly formed NASA selects seven of the military’s best test pilots to become astronauts. Competing to be the first in space, these men achieve the extraordinary, inspiring the world to turn towards a new horizon of ambition and hope.

Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way executive produced the eight-episode series about the Mercury 7 astronauts, which was described as an “aspirational story about exploration, ambition, determination and resilience and reminds us that human beings can achieve the extraordinary when united by a common purpose.”
