Disney CEO Bob Iger Shares His Thoughts on Twitter - "Why Am I Doing This? Why Do I Endure This Pain?"
I’ll be honest… I hate Twitter. It’s filled with so much hate, mean-spirited people, and bullies. What’s funny is that even the people who think they are changing the world for the better with what they do and say seem like they are doing it with hate in their hearts. They are bullies, plain and simple.
Now, I know not everyone is like that. I know there are good and kind people on Twitter that really are trying to make a difference, people that actually listen and can have a respectful discussion or debate. But in my own experience, it’s the people who are out to bully and hurt that seek me out! A lot of people on Twitter like making others feel like shit.
I’m rarely on Twitter these days. I check in every once in a while, and then I wish I didn’t. Luckily, I’m not addicted to social media like a lot of people. Seriously, though, how in the hell do some people spend all day on Twitter tweeting stuff!? I work all day, I’m writing all the time, and I don’t have the time to tweet. There are better more productive things that I’m doing with my time. I just can’t afford the distraction.
But, if you’re into Twitter… then I applaud you for being able to survive its insanity. Anyway, at one point, Disney was interested in buying Twitter back in 2016, but they never ended up going through with it. Why? Because it’s so damn toxic!
Disney CEO Bob Iger has explained in his new book, The Ride of a Lifetime, that the “nastiness is extraordinary. The New York Times shared the following:
“The troubles were greater than I wanted to take on, greater than I thought it was responsible for us to take on. There were Disney brand issues, the whole impact of technology on society. The nastiness is extraordinary. I like looking at my Twitter newsfeed because I want to follow 15, 20 different subjects. Then you turn and look at your notifications and you’re immediately saying, why am I doing this? Why do I endure this pain? Like a lot of these platforms, they have the ability to do a lot of good in our world. They also have an ability to do a lot of bad. I didn’t want to take that on.”
That perfectly sums up Twitter… “Why am I doing this? Why do I endure this pain?” That should be Twitter’s new slogan.
What are your thoughts on Twitter? Are you swimming around in the shark-infested waters of Twitter?
