Disney+ Confirms Live-Action AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE Series and This Horror Comic Adaptation Needs to Be R-Rated
For years, Disney+ has been the go-to destination for Marvel fans, offering everything from the MCU to fan-favorite series like Daredevil: Born Again and X-Men '97. But every once in a while, the streamer throws a curveball, and this latest announcement is pretty cool!
Disney+ has officially ordered a live-action adaptation of Afterlife with Archie, the horror comic created by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Francesco Francavilla.
If you've read the comic, you already know this isn't your typical Archie story. It's brutal, unsettling, packed with monsters, and honestly feels like the last comic anyone would've expected to end up on Disney+.
The project was first reported to be under consideration for a series order last October, but now it's officially moving forward. Disney has confirmed the pickup and is aiming to debut the series around Halloween next year, which feels like the perfect release window for a zombie-infested trip to Riverdale.
Unlike Marvel's upcoming Marvel Zombies, which is animated, Afterlife with Archie will bring its nightmare-fueled story to life in live-action. That decision makes this project even more surprising because the source material doesn't pull its punches.
Aguirre-Sacasa is returning to the property he co-created, the comic that helped launch Archie Comics' darker modern era and ultimately paved the way for Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. He's writing the series and executive producing alongside Greg Berlanti, with Warner Bros. Television also producing.
The official synopsis suggests the adaptation will stay very close to the comic. The zombie apocalypse begins after "a supernatural spell from a certain teen witch" goes horribly wrong, forcing Archie Andrews and the residents of Riverdale to battle the undead while somehow trying to survive the everyday struggles of being teenagers.
Aguirre-Sacasa shared his excitement in a statement, saying: “Getting to turn ‘Afterlife’ into a TV series for the amazing team at Disney+ with our incredible partners at Berlanti Productions, WB and, of course, Jon (Goldwater) and his ‘Archie’ family is truly a full-circle moment – and the ultimate dream project for me. Time to say a prayer for Archie, Betty, Veronica and the whole gang, ’cause THE ZOMBIES ARE COMING!!!!”
When Afterlife with Archie debuted in 2013, it completely reinvented the wholesome Archie universe. It started with zombies tearing through Riverdale, but things only became more terrifying from there.
The story eventually introduced vampires, ghosts, Lovecraftian horrors like Cthulhu, and plenty of gruesome violence along the way. That's exactly why this announcement is so fascinating.
If Disney+ intends to stay faithful to the comic, it's hard to imagine the series landing anywhere below an R-rated level of intensity, even if television uses TV-MA instead of film ratings.
The comic's horror isn't just about zombies wandering around in the background. Characters are ripped apart, beloved faces meet horrific fates, and the supernatural chaos only escalates with every issue. Watering that down would strip away much of what made the comic such a standout.
There's another exciting angle to this series as well. The original Afterlife with Archie comic only ran for ten issues across three years before coming to an abrupt halt, leaving several storylines unfinished and fans without a real conclusion.
Bringing Aguirre-Sacasa back gives him the chance to revisit those ideas, expand the mythology, and potentially deliver the ending readers have wanted for more than a decade.
Out of all the places where Afterlife with Archie could've resurfaced, Disney+ might be the biggest surprise. If the creative team truly embraces the comic's gruesome horror, this could end up being an awesome series!
