Disney Developing Live-Action CINDERELLA Spinoff Movie STEPSISTERS With Akiva Schaffer

Disney is digging back into its fairy tale vault, but this time it’s looking at Cinderella from a very different angle. The studio is developing a live-action spinoff titled Stepsisters, and instead of focusing on the glass-slipper-wearing heroine, the spotlight shifts to Anastasia and Drizella, the infamous siblings who made her life a living hell.

It’s a twist on a story we all know, giving the so-called villains a chance to step forward and tell their side of things. Whether that means redemption, comedy, or full-on chaos is still up in the air, but the creative team involved suggests this could lean into something unexpected.

The concept opens the door for a fresh take on a classic tale. Anastasia and Drizella are finally getting their moment after years of being defined by their cruelty toward Cinderella.

Disney has brought in Akiva Schaffer to direct, coming off the surprisingly clever Chip n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers. If you’ve seen that film, you know Schaffer has a knack for mixing absurd humor with heartfelt storytelling.

He’s also one-third of The Lonely Island alongside Andy Samberg and Jorma Taccone, which already hints that Stepsisters might carry a sharp comedic edge.

On script duties, Dan Gregor and Doug Mand are stepping in to rework a draft originally written by Michael Montemayor. Gregor and Mand have collaborated with Schaffer before, so there’s already a built-in chemistry that could help shape a unique tone for this reimagining.

Production is being handled by Ali Bell for Party Over Here, with Disney Live Action EVP Jessica Virtue overseeing alongside creative executive Cady Stark.

The team is also currently in production on the action comedy Protecting Jared, starring Jason Momoa and Samberg, which is filming in Hawaii for Netflix.

What do you think about Disney developing a movie about Cinderella’s stepsisters? It’ll be interesting to see if audiences show up for this one.
