Disney Has Not Greenlit AVATAR 4 and AVATAR 5 Yet

Production has finished on Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 and James Cameron has written Avatar 4 and Avatar 5. However, we may not see past Avatar 3. The reason? Disney hasn’t given the green light yet. It’s as simple as that.

Avatar is currently owned by Fox, but the Disney-Fox merger is rumored to close by the end of this month. That means that while most, if not all, projects in production or post-production will be finished, no future projects are certain.

According to CinemaBlend, Fox was going to wait to greenlight 4 and 5 until after they saw how the first two sequels to the highly successful Avatar was after about 11 years. If these sequels didn’t do well, Fox probably wasn’t going to continue the franchise.

Well, now Disney has to make that call. My guess is that it will be given the go, and I think it’ll happen before Avatar 2 hits theaters. The reason? Theme parks. Walt Disney World is already home to Pandora – The World of Avatar and that means that the success of that park depends, at least in part, on the movies. The movies and park work together to maintain interest in the franchise which leads to more people seeing the movies and going to visit the park which means more money for Disney. That’s just a theory though as Bob Iger told Barron’s recently that Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 have not been greenlit.

Avatar 2 is set to premiere on December 18, 2020, and Avatar 3 will release a year later on December 17, 2021. Do you think Disney will give the green light?
