Disney+ is moving forward with its upcoming sci-fi film Crater. They’ve hired Kyle Patrick Alvarez (The Stanford Prison Experiment, Homecoming, 13 Reasons Why) to direct the film, which is being produced by Shawn Levy. Levy was originally looking to direct the film at Fox, but after it moved to Disney, he decided to just stay on as a producer.

The film is described as a coming-of-age story in the vein of Stand By Me, set on a moon colony. “After the death of his father, a boy growing up on a lunar mining colony takes a trip to explore a mysterious crater, along with his four best friends, prior to being permanently relocated to another planet.”

This sounds like the kind of movie that I’d enjoy watching. I’m a big fan of adventure and exploration, and the moon setting is pretty damn cool. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing how this movie turns out and Alcarez seems like a solid choice of talent to take it on.

The spec script, which was voted #1 on the Tracking Board’s 2015 Hit List and was #5 on the 2015 Black List, was written by John J. Griffin.
