Disney is Developing a Teen Movie Set During Disneyland's Grad Nite
For years Disneyland and Disney World have held a tradition since 1961 where high school students who are graduating get the entire theme park to themselves for one whole night. Having grown up in California, I was lucky enough to have that experience and it was an absolute blast! My friends and I had some fun and wacky adventures that night. It's definitely a lot more fun than prom!
Well, it turns out that Disney Studios is currently developing a film that is set during Grad Nite at Disney World. The news was revealed by David Wain (Wet Hot American Summer) while he was a guest on magician Penn Jillette's podcast Penn’s Sunday School. This is what Wain said about it:
"Somebody sent me a thing — Disney wants to do a thing where kids are stuck in Disney World on grad school night, and it’s like a teen [movie]."
Having experienced Grad Nite myself, it's not hard to imagine a movie set during the event. I can see so many different kinds of stories and characters that they could play with, even without any teens having to be "stuck" at the theme park.
I look at a film like Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist and can imagine a similar coming-of-age type story set at Grad Nite at Disney World. I just imagine it as that rowdy kind of teen comedy.
Nothing else has been revealed about the film, but if it's something that David Wain actually ends up doing, I think he'd be a great fit for it with his background. He also worked on Children's Hospital and most recently directed the Netflix film A Futile and Stupid Gesture.
Who knows if Disney is even still concidering this project, but does it sound like something you would be interested in watching?
