Disney+ Is Developing a YA Movie Reimagining of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA
Disney+ is in early development on a new film titled Phantom, which will be a YA movie reimagining of Gaston Leroux’s classic novel The Phantom of The Opera.
The series is being developed by Kenny Ortega, who previously developed High School Musical and Descendants for Disney. He will direct and executive produce the film. He’s also worked on projects such as Dirty Dancing, Hocus Pocus, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Pretty in Pink.
The spec script for the film was written by Giovanni M. Porta (At Midnight) from a story by Porta and Eric Bromberg.
The 1909 novel is set in the 1880s and it tells the story of Erik, a mysterious, disfigured musical genius who lives beneath the Paris Opera House. He becomes obsessed with a young soprano, Christine, manipulating events to make her the star of the opera.
This story has been adapted and retold tons of times for theater, film, and television, but it’s most well-known version is Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Broadway musical.
There’s no other information on how the story will be handled for this film, but if it’s a YA reimagining I suspect it will involve social media and/or pop-star-type stuff.
