Disney+ Is Developing an Adaptation of The Fantasy Novel THE THIEF
Disney has picked up the rights to the YA fantasy novel titled The Thief, and they will be adapting it for Disney+. The novel comes from Megan Whalen Turner, and the script will be written by Brian Duffield, who wrote this year’s creature feature Love and Monsters. I loved that movie! It was one of the most enjoyable films that I’ve seen this year, so I hope that The Thief ends up being just as good.
The Thief is the first book in a series known as The Queen’s Thief. The series was launched in 1996, and the sixth and final book in the series was published earlier this year by Greenwillow Books.
The story follows a charismatic boy named Gen, aka Eugenides the thief. “When Gen is released from prison by a king’s magus, who then coerces him into a quest for a legendary object, the ensuing adventure thrusts him into the center of political machinations, deception and danger.”
Here’s the description of the story from the book:
The king's scholar, the magus, believes he knows the site of an ancient treasure. To attain it for his king, he needs a skillful thief, and he selects Gen from the king's prison. The magus is interested only in the thief's abilities.
What Gen is interested in is anyone's guess. Their journey toward the treasure is both dangerous and difficult, lightened only imperceptibly by the tales they tell of the old gods and goddesses.
Jim Whitaker, a Disney-based producer whose credits include Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made and Pete’s Dragon, is producing the film, and it’ll be interesting to see how it turns out.
