Disney Is Developing THE PRINCESS BRIDE and BEDKNOBS AND BROOMSTICKS Into Broadway Musicals
Broadway has taken a big hit during the pandemic, with many shows being pushed back and many others canceling their runs altogether. One show that has shut down completely is Disney’s Frozen, which had opened in 2018 to decent numbers, but ones that paled compared to its predecessors The Lion King and Aladdin, which will continue their own theatrical runs.
Broadway and Disney are using this time to take a hard look at what they have and do a lot of shuffling and rebuilding. And in the process, they have announced several new musicals that will be adapted for the stage, including The Jungle Book, Hercules, The Princess Bride, and Bedknobs and Broomsticks.
The New York Times says The Jungle Book “will be directed by Christopher Gattelli with a book by Rajiv Joseph and new songs by Richard Sherman.” Hercules “will be directed by Lear deBessonet, will be written by Robert Horn, Alan Menken and David Zippel.” The Princess Bride “will be adapted as a musical with a book by Bob Martin and Rick Elice and songs by David Yazbek.” Bedknobs and Broomsticks will be “directed by Candice Edmunds and Jamie Harrison, with a book by Brian Hill and new songs by Neil Bartram.”
This sounds like an exciting new slate for Disney to bring to Broadway! I would love to see any of these shows, but I’m especially excited about The Princess Bride. What show would you most like to see?
