Disney Is Remaking the 1980s Teen Space Adventure SPACE CAMP for Disney+
If you grew up in the ‘80s, you may or may not remember a teen space adventure movie from Disney titled Space Camp. The movie told the story of a group of teens who attend an astronaut camp near Cape Canaveral, Florida. While there, they were allowed to sit in a space shuttle during a routine engine test and the shuttle is accidentally launched into space in the process. This forces them into a situation of survival as they have to work together to bring the shuttle back down to Earth.
The original film starred Lea Thompson, Kelly Preston, Tate Donovan, and Joaquin Phoenix in his first theatrical feature film. I haven’t seen this movie in years, but this news of Disney remaking it for Disnsy+ quickly brought back the memories.
Yep, Disney is remaking Space Camp and they hired SNL writers Mikey Day and Streeter Seidell to pen the script. They are working on the Home Alone reboot for Disney+ as well. John Rickard, whose credits include Rampage and Horrible Bosses, is producing the project.
The original film didn’t really do very well at the box office as it was released in the summer of 1986, which happened to be shortly after the Challenger space shuttle exploded earlier in the year. So, the timing of the release wasn’t very good.
The original movie was pretty fun, and it’ll be interesting to see how they handle the remake. I hope that they set it in the 80s!
