Disney Moves the Release Date of Pixar's SOUL to November

As expected, Disney pushed back the theatrical release of Pixar’s upcoming animated film Soul. The movie was originally set to open June 19th, but it will now debut November 20th, 2020.

We don’t really know when movie theaters will open up again. As of right now, California and a few other states are in lockdown until mid-May.

The studio also announced their upcoming original fantasy film Raya and the Last Dragon has been pushed from November 25th, 2020 to March 12th, 2021. There was also an untitled live-action film that was initially scheduled for that date that has been removed from Disney’s schedule.

Soul comes from director Pete Docter (Up, Inside Out) and Jamie Foxx stars in the film as a character named Joe, a guy who worked hard his whole to live his dream of being a jazz musician. Then, when the opportunity presents itself a tragedy strikes. The story follows his soul on a journey into the afterlife where he meets 22, a soul who has yet to go to Earth, who is played by Tina Fey. Together they have to find a way to get Joe back to his body.

The official tagline for Soul reads: “Ever wonder where your passion, your dreams, and your interests come from? What is it that makes you… YOU?” The movie will take you on a journey from the streets of New York City to the cosmic realms to discover the answers to life’s most important questions.

Soul “imagines that every person on earth comes pre-installed with a soul formed and perfected in a cosmic realm. Joe Gardner is a middle-school band teacher who gets the chance of a lifetime to play at the best jazz club in town. But one small misstep takes him from the streets of New York City to The Great Before – a fantastical place where new souls get their personalities, quirks and interests before they go to Earth. Determined to return to his life, Joe teams up with a precocious soul, 22, who has never understood the appeal of the human experience. As Joe desperately tries to show 22 what’s great about living, he may just discover the answers to some of life’s most important questions.”

The film also stars Daveed Diggs, Ahmir Questlove, Angela Bassett, and Phylicia Rashad. Globally renowned musician Jon Batiste will be writing original jazz music for the film, and Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross from Nine Inch Nails will compose an original score that will drift between the real and soul worlds.
