Disney No Longer Moving Forward with Captain Nemo Series NAUTILUS, Which Has Already Been Shot
Disney continues to gut upcoming content that was supposed to come to Disney+. First The Spiderwick Chronicles, and now Nautilus, the Captain Nemo series based on Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea. Also, like The Spiderwick Chronicles, the entire first season of the series was already shot.
The series was set to give the famed 19th-century novel a new spin, “telling the origin story of Captain Nemo and his legendary submarine, the Nautilus. An Indian prince robbed of his birthright and family, a prisoner of the East India Company and a man bent on revenge against the forces that have taken everything from him, Nemo set sail with his ragtag crew on board the awe-inspiring vessel, battling foes and discovering magical underwater worlds.”
Shazad Latif (The Pursuit of Love) was cast in the lead role of Captain Nemo. His character is described as an “enigmatic Indian prince who steals a fantastical submarine from the East India Company and sets sail in search of adventure under the sea.” That submarine is the legendary Nautilus.
Michael Matthews directed the epic 10-part series, and James Dormer executive produced and wrote the series.
According to Deadline, the decision to cancel the series “is part of Disney’s streaming content removal plan unveiled in May, for which the company is taking an impairment charge of approximately $1.5 billion-$1.8 billion. It followed the February announcement by Disney that it intends to cut $3 billion in non-sports content spend across the company.”
I was looking forward to this series because I’ve always loved this story, and luckily there is still a chance that we will get to see it. It’s said that Disney+ is working with the production team to find a new home for Nautilus, with meetings and screenings underway.
