Disney Pauses Live-Action TANGLED in the Wake of SNOW WHITE Disappointment
Disney has decided to press pause on pre-production on the studio’s live-action adaptation of Tangled for the time being. Following the disappointing box office numbers for the live-action Snow White, Disney is reassessing their upcoming slate and strategy.
The movie had been in development with Michael Gracey on board to direct. Sabrina Carpenter was rumored to be in talks for the lead role.
Based on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, the original 2010 pic followed the magically long-haired Rapunzel, who had spent her entire life in a tower. But now that a runaway thief has stumbled upon her, she is about to discover the world for the first time, and who she really is.
Disney’s strategy of taking classic animated pics and turning them into live-action adaptations had been successful over the years going back to Alice In Wonderland.
Most recently, Mufasa: The Lion King since its release in December has grossed $720 million worldwide. There have also been some misses, with Snow White joining The Little Mermaid as live-action tentpoles that underperformed, and they have forced execs how to approach these films going forward.
I was looking forward to the adaptation of Tangled, so hopefully they’re able to move forward with it at some point.
