Disney+ Producing THE FULL MONTY Series With The Original Cast Returning
The 1997 British underdog movie The Full Monty is getting a limited TV sequel series thanks to Disney+, and the original cast of the film are returning to reprise their roles! That cast includes Robert Carlyle, Tom Wilkinson, Mark Addy and Lesley Sharp.
In the original film, “After losing his job at a steel factory, Gaz (Carlyle) learns that his wife wants to sue him for missed child support payments. Desperate for money, Gaz and his friend Dave (Addy) decide to create their own male strip-tease act. The two friends recruit four more men, including their former foreman (Wilkinson) and a security guard. The group promises that their show will succeed because they are willing to go ‘the Full Monty’: completely naked.”
The upcoming limited series will follow the original band of brothers “as they navigate Sheffield and its crumbling healthcare, education and employment sectors, exploring the brighter, sillier and more humane way forward where communal effort can still triumph over adversity.” The series will also introduce a new cast of children and grandchildren of the returning characters.
The Academy Award-winning screenwriter of the original film, Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire), and producer Uberto Pasolini (Nowhere Special) are reuniting for the project. The series is being helmed by directors Andrew Chaplin (Alma’s Not Normal) and Catherine Morshead (No Offence’s).
The series was developed by Searchlight Television and FX, produced by Little Island Productions and executive produced by Lee Mason, Director of Scripted Content for Disney+. Alice Nutter is co-writer and Simon Lewis is series producer. Mason Said in a statement:
“Twenty-five years ago Simon introduced us to a group of funny, fearless and resilient unemployed working-class men from Sheffield and the world fell in love with them. We’re therefore delighted to reunite the original cast for this brand-new series on Disney+, to catch up with these iconic characters.”
The series is currently in production in Sheffield and Manchester.
