Disney Releases THE LITTLE MERMAID "Kiss the Girl" Clip
During the MTV Movie and TV Awards, which people seem to take seriously now, Disney released a clip from its upcoming live-action remake of The Little Mermaid. That clip showcases the scene that features the “Kiss the Girl” musical number.
The scene features Halle Bailey as Ariel and Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric as they take a romantic boat ride. The goal is for Ariel to try and land true love’s kiss from Eric to break Ursula’s spell and get her voice back.
The scene pretty much plays out exactly the way is does in the classic animated movie. But, some of the lyrics of the song were changed to allow consent like in the scene. Alan Menken previously explained:
“There are some lyric changes in ‘Kiss the Girl’ because people have gotten very sensitive about the idea that [Prince Eric] would, in any way, force himself on [Ariel].”
“We have some revisions in ‘Poor Unfortunate Souls’ regarding lines that might make young girls somehow feel that they shouldn’t speak out of turn, even though Ursula is clearly manipulating Ariel to give up her voice.”
“The Little Mermaid is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters, and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea, and while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric. While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land, but ultimately places her life – and her father's crown – in jeopardy.”
Check out the new teaser, and get ready to watch The Little Mermaid in theaters on May 26th.
