Disney Reportedly Developing a Live-Action SLEEPING BEAUTY Film with a Twist

Disney might be heading back into fairy tale territory, this time with a whole new cultural backdrop. According to industry insider Daniel Richtman, the studio is reportedly working on a new live-action project titled Aurora, a fresh reimagining of the classic Sleeping Beauty story, but with one major twist… it will take place in Mexico instead of 14th-century Europe.

This rumored project comes at a time when Disney is still experimenting with reboots of its classic animated films. The studio’s live-action slate has had its ups and downs lately.

The recent Snow White remake didn’t exactly light up the box office, but Lilo & Stitch was a massive success, grossing over a billion dollars worldwide and becoming the second-highest-grossing movie of 2025.

Details about Aurora are being kept under wraps, and Disney hasn’t made any official announcements yet. For now, this should be treated purely as a rumor, though it’s definitely one Disney fans are sure to keep an eye on.

If Aurora does happen, it wouldn’t be the first time Disney has revisited the world of Sleeping Beauty. Back in 2014, the studio released Maleficent, which flipped the script by telling the story from the villain’s perspective.

Angelina Jolie starred as the dark fairy herself, while Elle Fanning played Princess Aurora. The film’s success led to a sequel, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, released in 2019, featuring Jolie and Fanning reprising their roles.

A third Maleficent movie was announced back in December 2023, but updates have been scarce. Earlier this year, writer Linda Woolverton said that the film was still in development as of March 2025. It’s unclear whether that project will still move forward if Aurora moves into production.

If Aurora becomes a reality, it could offer something fresh for Disney fans, a retelling of a timeless fairy tale through the lens of Mexican culture and mythology.
