Disney Reportedly Refused to Let ABC Cancel AGENTS OF SHIELD After 4th Season

ABC's Agents of SHEILD has had its ups and its downs, but it turns out that Disney has believed in the show even when it was performing at its worst. The most recent season of Agents of SHIELD was much better than seasons of the past.

However, Agents of SHIELD seems to have no clear plans for any sort of crossover with the cinematic universe in the near future. Variety reports that ABC was all but ready to cancel Agents of Shield after its fourth season, and would have done so if not for Disney pulling rank and forcing its renewal. There is no specific reason why it was almost canceled, though ratings may have had something to do with it.

It's kind of neat to see higher-ups believe in a show even when it isn't performing as hoped. Some of the best shows in television history weren't necessarily the most watched. Good on you Disney.
