Disney Still Committed to July Release Date for MULAN; One Week After TENET
The reopening of society is on the horizon, whether it be temporarily or for good, and I am hopeful that movie theaters will be able to recover from this pandemic and we will be able to see our favorite action flicks, heavy dramas, period pieces, and Oscar contenders up on the big screen again. While many studios are waiting to see what happens in regards to the reopening of theaters, and many movies have resorted to On Demand releases, we have two films on the horizon that are still holding to their summer release dates.
Movie fans have been looking forward to this July, when we will be able to see Christopher Nolan’s big summer blockbuster, Tenet, and Disney recently added to the anticipation by moving their live-action adaptation of Mulan to July as well. Mulan was originally supposed to hit theaters at the end of March, but this was when the pandemic had just begun, and theaters had closed down. Instead of releasing the movie On Demand like some others did, Disney decided the best option would probably be to wait it out, and as of right now, they are still happy with that decision.
In a recent interview with CNBC, Disney CEO Bob Chapek said of the July 24th release date:
At Disney, we're a bunch of optimists. I think that's a good date for this title. You have to balance people's anxieties about going out in public with the pent-up demand.
I think this is a good date to work with. It will give people and theaters a solid couple months to work through the kinks of reopening to limited audiences and abide by local guidelines in these weird times. Everything in our lives right now is kind of on a wait and see/roll with the punches basis, so the film dates are still subject to change, but if everything goes according to plan, Tenet will hit theaters on July 17, and Mulan will play July 24. Are you excited for these titles?
